Welcome to my new website!

One of the most frequent questions I’ve been getting about this new site is “How did you get such great photos for your website?”

We humans are very visual creatures. Having photos for your website that gives your visitors a good sense of who you are and what your business is about can be a very big advantage compared to a site with just average photography.

So in this post, I wanted to share some tips for getting great photos for your website.

5 Tips to Get Extraordinary Photos for Your Website

  1. Find a photographer who’s a good fit for your project. The photos on many modern websites are one of the first things visitors see. They also set the tone for the whole visual experience of the site.

For the photos for my website, I hired Kip Malone - a commercial photographer in Albuquerque who also does adventure photography. I had a sense that Kip would understand not only my work but also what I needed to communicate about my lifestyle.

  2. Develop your overarching story. Before you talk about locations, wardrobe choices, etc, have a conversation with your photographer about what story you want your imagery to tell. For instance, for the photos for my website, I wanted to not only communicate that I help my social entrepreneur clients get great business results but that I also help them increase the quality of their lives.

  3. Allow people to help you tell this story. Together is better! Instead of you and the photographer trying to do this important job alone, who can you enlist to help? For my photoshoot, I asked my friend and colleague Genevieve Chavez Mitchell and my girlfriend Eva to join us. They helped in a multitude of ways, from standing in as a client to holding lights, from making me smile to selecting locations.

  4. Bring your business to life through wardrobe, location and props. Once you understand the deeper story you’re trying to tell, get creative about telling it. Look for ways to combine things like your wardrobe, locations, tools you use in your business (ex. podcast mic), and the like to bring your business alive in the photos for your website.

  5. Share in a multi-dimensional way. The images on most business websites typically tell a very narrow story of a person. However, when you share with a wider range of what the founder or team is authentically like - including what you do when you’re not working - you create the opportunity for a much more genuine and resonant connection.
